New scholarships announced for Heythrop Library

December 7, 2022

About the scholarships

The reading room of the Heythrop Library, owned by the Jesuits in Britain, is based in the London Jesuit Centre in Mayfair. The collection includes over 200,000 books in total across four sites. About 8,000 books are stored at the London Jesuit Centre. The earliest books go back to 1614.

Professor Carl Stephen Patrick Hunter OBE signed a Memorandum of Understanding today about the Professor CSP Hunter Scholarships which are intended to fund Heythrop Library membership for early career scholars in theology or philosophy.

Professor Hunter has many hats, including:

- Director-General of the Durham Institute of Research, Development & Invention

- Director of the Centre of Underwater Acoustic Analysis

- Professor-in-Practice at Durham University Business School

- Chairman of the Geostrategy Forum, the Council on Geostrategy

- Fellow of the Royal Navy Strategic Studies Centre

- Chairman of the British Exporters Association

A recent recipient of Durham University's Dunelmensis Award for contribution to research and undergraduate development, Professor Hunter is committed to the UK leading in maritime safety, including the eradication of modern slavery at sea. He and his family have been long-time parishioners of Farm Street Church. He is married to Dorothy with four children and lives in London and Somerset.

Clemens Gresser, Heythrop Librarian, said:

"This idea of a scholarship is based on my experience of dealing with membership enquiries. Sometimes an early career academic will enquire about joining the Library, but then not apply after all. I hope that thanks to Professor Hunter’s generosity, we will see more younger scholars making use of the riches of our collections!”
